Ecotric Dolphin Fat Tire Electric Mountain Bike Review

The Dolphin Fat Tire Bike is not only designed for off-road adventures but also urban treks.

Its versatility due to the fact it’s a foldable model (yes you read right) is one of the reasons it’s a top-rated electric mountain bike that’s capable of some pretty awesome offroading and folds up nicely to pop in your trunk before heading home.

Sturdy Frame and Fat Tires

Chances are, you’re planning on taking the bike off-road. The Dolphin Fat Tire e-bike can handle the toughest terrain.

It comes with a lightweight, durable aluminum alloy frame that won’t easily bend or break when you’re biking over rocks and bumps.

Front and rear fenders give the bike a sporty look and protect you from mud and water.

The two 20″ x 4.0″ fat tires give you plenty of contact on soft and hard surfaces. You can easily bike over sandy trails without sinking or becoming stuck.

Snowy city streets and trails also aren’t a problem. With this off-road electric mountain bike, there are almost no limits on where you can ride.

The fact that the Ecotric Dolphin Electric Mountain Bike can fold in half for easy trunk storage makes this model one of the more popular models in the Ecotric range.

Plenty of Gears and Braking Power

With seven gears, along with a pedal assist, you won’t have any problems tackling steep climbs. The electric mountain bike will give you an added push when you can’t pedal any farther.

The on-demand throttle is also great when you use the e-bike around town. You’ll still need to be in the bike lane but with a top speed of 20mph with electric power, you’ll still be moving along.

Mechanical disc front and rear brakes ensure you always stop. The 160mm rotor provides plenty of braking power on wet streets and steep hills.

Motor and Battery Life

The bike comes with a rear hub motor that won’t interfere with your pedaling. The 36V motor will power the bike up to 23 miles.

It also takes 3-8 hours to fully recharge so you’ll want to plan your trips to avoid running out of power.

With a battery life of 400-600 cycles, it won’t need replacing for a few years.

What to Look For in an Off-road Electric Mountain Bike

After looking at a few off-road e-bikes specifications, you quickly noticed that not all electric bicycles are the same.

Some differences can affect everything from how far you ride to where you can go. Here are a few things to look for in an electric mountain bike.Ecotric Dolphin Fat Tire Electric Mountain Bike Review

Type of Electric Mountain Bike

Electric bicycles are divided into three categories decided by how much assistance the motor gives.

  • Class One: The motor is only on when you’re pedaling and the bike’s speed is under 20mph.
  • Class Two: Comes with a pedal-assist up to 20mph, and comes with a throttle-powered motor.
  • Class Three: Has a pedal-assist and has a throttle mode up to 28mph.

Class One e-bikes are the least expensive and you can ride them anywhere.

The same applies to Class Two models, but they are priced a little higher due to the throttle-powered motor.

Class Three electric mountain bikes are the highest-priced, but they do go farther and faster than the other two classes.

The downside to the powerful electric bikes is they’re not allowed on all public trails.

Distance

The distance an e-bike can travel depends on the motor and battery size. Larger motors provide more power, but also drain the battery faster. Larger batteries can go farther but are heavier. An e-bike can go anywhere from 20-100 miles depending on the motor and battery. Most affordable models are in the 20-30 mile range.

Battery

There are three things to look at in an electric bike battery.

  1. You want to know the charge time. Most batteries need 3-5 hours to fully recharge, though larger ones will take longer. Your e-bike comes with a charger, you can spend extra on one with a little more power to speed up charging times. You can also find portable chargers so you don’t have to worry about a dead battery.
  2. Even though most electric mountain bikes only use one battery, some come with two. The second battery is a backup that takes over if the first one runs out of power.
  3. Batteries are either mounted onto the frame, leaving room for a bike bag or bottle holder. Others are external. You might lose a little space on the frame but the battery is easier to charge.

Motor

Where the motor’s placed matters. It can either be a mid-drive motor that’s placed on the bottom bracket or a hub-drive motor on the front or rear wheel. Most e-bikes with hub-drive motors are on the rear.

When the motor is on the rear wheel, power is sent to the pedals. You feel a slight push, like a helping hand. When the motor is on the front wheel, you’ll feel more of a forward pull than a push. Mid-drive motors work with the bike’s gears so you won’t feel the momentum but will notice it’s easier to pedal uphill.

Frame

Electric mountain bike frames are usually carbon, aluminum. Carbon is the strongest and most expensive. Aluminum is cheaper and lightweight. However, you are sacrificing a little with durability. You want a lightweight and durable frame that provides stability and is easy to control. The motor and battery are already adding weight, you don’t want the bike’s other components adding any extra.

FAQs

Whether you’re new to electric mountain biking or have a few questions you’ve always wanted to ask. Here are some answers to frequently asked questions.

  1. Do I need a Driver’s License for my off-road e-bike?

Unless your electric mountain bike can keep up with traffic, you do not need a driver’s license. Most models have maximum speeds of around 30mph unless you’re pedaling downhill. Most cities will also require you to stay in the designated bike lane when you’re on the street. It is always a good idea to check with local ordinances, especially if you own a faster e-bike. You can also ask about age restrictions. Sometimes a certain age is required to ride an electric mountain bike on the street.

  1. What is torque?

Torque rarely applies to mountain bikes, unless they’re electric. Torque refers to the driving force the motor provides when the rider is pedaling. The higher the torque, the more power you get from the bike’s electric motor.

  1. Do I need an electric off-road mountain bike with a lot of gears?

Standard mountain bikes typically come with 20 or more gears. There is a gear for every aspect of riding. Electric mountain bikes are different. They come with one chain and use a drivetrain that has anywhere from 7 to 12 gears. The motor provides the extra power that you’re lacking in the number of gears.

  1. Thank you for sharing your review about Ecotric Dolphin Fat Tire Electric Mountain Bike. What a detailed and good review you have provided! I liked all the features which you had mentioned in your review such us thick and resistible tires for mountain biking and its battery durability. I liked it because of the electric feature which gives it a new invention touch and it is also very good when we are tired of pedaling. Having the electric option is something extraordinary to better direct and serve us towards reaching our destination.

I’m pretty much set now on this model and will be purchasing one soon thanks to your review. Keep the awesome reviews coming Marin I love reading them and have bought a few of your recommendations over the past 2 years and have not been disappointed yet

    All the best!

    1. Hi again Meen, and thanks for your comment. I have seen a few of your comments over the last while and very happy you are enjoying my posts 🙂

Not had any real negative feedback on this model yet so I’m fully confident you are making a really good purchase. Be sure to report back after you have given your Ecotric Dolphin e-Bike a good run in.

      Take care.

      Cheers,

  2. Electronic fat bike? Didn’t know that this kind of bike exists. I have not seen one yet. Maybe it’s pretty recent. The first question that popped in my mind was how far you can go until the battery dies.  I also thought about the weight. But the frame seems pretty light. The price seems right.

    1. Hey friend.. Thanks for the comment. To answer your questions.  Electric Mountain Bikes are not that new but the technology behind them is improving dramatically over the last year or two.  Battery power is very rider-specific due to rider weight, inclement being climbed, offroad or on flat trail etc.  But ECOTRIC will give you estimates for average use such as up to 30 miles on a single charge for the average rider.

If you go to the main website via any link in this post you will see rider-specific information.

Yes, I agree the price point is pretty amazing for the quality of the e-bike.

The bike is fairly light but lighter models are available, at a premium cost though. ECOTRIC supply bottom end prices but supply quality at those prices but you do get what you pay for.

If you’re looking for an ultra-light electric mountain bike you could check out the TREK range but you will be hard-pushed to get one under $4000.

  3. When I was a kid, my brother built a motorized bike using a cast-off motor from somewhere (Lawnmower?  Weed wacker?  Who knows?) but I had no idea they existed in “Real Life”.  I don’t think I’ll be climbing mountains anytime soon but I would love to have this for other things such as sightseeing when I’m on vacation.  The fact that it folds makes it easy to take along.  It’s fairly light, has a reasonable charging time and a reasonable travel distance.  Thank you for this great review!

    1. Hi Cynthia,

Wow, your brother sounds like a bit of an inventor, pretty cool stuff for a kid to do 🙂 Yes, the folding feature is really amazing I think, and taps into a whole new market like the one you just mentioned.  I review Ecortic bikes as mountain trail bikes etc but they can for sure be used in urban city settings too.
